GJEPC and World Crafts Council join hands
In the endeavour to promote the traditional crafts of Indian jewellery, the Gem and Jewellery Export promotion Council (India’s apex gem and jewellery body) tied up with World Crafts Council on the occasion of the Abhushan Design Dialogue Conference & Workshop which took place from 28th January – 3rd February, 2011 during the Crafts Exchange Program in New Delhi. The collaboration is directed at reviving the dying craftsmanship of traditional Indian jewellery, which exhibits varied types across the different states in India.
During the workshop, both entities supported four primary art forms -Filigree, Bidri, Patwa and Interlaced Jewellery. The council sponsored 22 participants for the workshop, including artisans, designers and faculty members from the Council's Institutions IIGJ, Mumbai, Jaipur, Delhi and IDI Surat National Institute of Design NID was the resource partner for this event, under the able guidance of Ms Shimul Vyas and her team. The specimens of these crafts will be put displayed on a dedicated zone at the IIJS 2011 (India International Jewelry Show) in Mumbai.
Through this effort both entities aim at developing talent for these dying art forms and creating a niche for Indian jewellery across the globe. The main objective of the World Crafts Council is the establishment of a craft movement to provide a better future to the craftsperson's of the world. The workshop was inaugurated by Rita Menon, Secretary, Ministry of Textiles in the presence of Mr. Rajiv Jain, Chairman, GJEPC along with other dignitaries.
The workshop preceded the Abhushan Conference, which was inaugurated on 4th February, 2011, at the hands of Chief Minister of Delhi, Ms. Sheila Dixit. The conference is slated until 6th February. An Amarapali Fashion show was slated to be held on 4th February at the Australian Embassy and Vajra dance of the Diamond at Chief Minister Sheila Dixit’s residence, the following day. Mr Hemant Shah from GJEPC is expected to make a presentation on 6th, to be attended by around 200 international delegates.
